When does an electric bike not look like an e bike?

Many people will imagine an electric bike as a rather hefty piece of machinery. Something less like a conventional push bike and more of a bike shaped mass adorned with wires, a chunky battery and an all round mobile circuit board feel.

While this might have been the case over twenty years ago, the modern e bike is something far more sophisticated.

Technology keeps on getting smaller and it is now far easier to make an electric bike look very similar to a pedal bike. Expedition Bikes Eco Bike in fact is modelled on a mountain bike, using many of the same parts too.

Here we look at how we make the electronics of an eBike look more subtle.

Keeping the circuitry on the inside

Bike frames are, for the most part, hollow. This gives ebike designers and builders plenty of physical room to encase their technology. Because some riders prefer not to necessarily look like they are riding an electric bike, hidden wires are a neat advantage.

Some manufacturers choose to attach cables and wires over the outside of the frame. However, because we use a bespoke bike frame at Expedition Bikes, we create an internal circuitry that keeps wires safe and hidden from the outside world.

Lightweight and compact batteries

The battery pack needed to provide the energy that powers the bike is the most noticeable difference on an electric bike. To disguise the battery it can be shaped to look like a large water bottle and placed in the same space on the bike.

Made of lightweight materials, the relatively small battery means that you can comfortably carry a spare. For long journeys or as a “just in case” measure, having this option is an advantage.

Though the perks of an eBike looking like a push bike may seem purely aesthetic, there are practical sides of it too.
